{"id":6149,"date":"2022-05-16T15:19:35","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T22:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/raisingspecialkids.net\/?p=6149"},"modified":"2022-05-16T15:26:38","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T22:26:38","slug":"in-memoriam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raisingspecialkids.net\/es\/2022\/05\/16\/in-memoriam\/","title":{"rendered":"In Memoriam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today we mourn the loss of two inspiring leaders who have left an indelible mark on the community of parents raising children with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paula Goldberg<\/strong> was the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pacer.org\/about\/memoriam\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pacer.org\/about\/memoriam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Executive Director of the PACER Center<\/a> in Minnesota and a pioneer in the Parent Center movement.\u00a0 She was a strong advocate whose work benefitted countless children and families.\u00a0 Paula leaves behind a strong legacy and a host of colleagues across the Parent Center network that will carry on her good work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Julie Beckett<\/strong> was an active child and family advocate and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/y_y1pal-KfE\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/y_y1pal-KfE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">co-founder of Family Voices<\/a>. Julie\u2019s advocacy on behalf of her own child, Katie, led to her daughter being the recipient of the first Medicaid Home and Community Based Services waiver, granted by the Secretary of Health and Human Services in 1981.\u00a0 In the years since, the \u201cKatie Beckett waiver\u201d has had a profound impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families by enabling children and adults to remain in their homes and receive services, avoiding institutional care settings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we mourn the loss of two inspiring leaders
