He spent six months in a Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, where a brain injury from his traumatic early birth led to a diagnosis of spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. From the very beginning, Medicaid has been a lifeline, ensuring he had access to the care he needed to survive and thrive.

Thanks to Medicaid-covered early intervention services, Tucker received physical, occupational, and speech therapy, helping him overcome significant developmental challenges. These services helped him develop the ability to talk, eat solid food, hold a spoon, read, develop friendships, and engage in meaningful conversations about the world around him. Now, as an informed young adult, he is “flummoxed” by the idea that Medicaid—a program that has given him so much—could be at risk.

Medicaid continues to be the foundation of Tucker’s independence. Through Home and Community-Based Services, he has opportunities to work, volunteer, and be fully included in his community—attending church, movies, sporting events, and concerts just like other individuals his age. These supports aren’t luxuries; they are essential for his well-being, dignity, and quality of life.

Over the years, Tucker has undergone eight surgeries related to his cerebral palsy and relies on daily prescriptions to maintain his physical and mental health. Without Medicaid, his family would have faced financial devastation, which would have impacted not only his future but also his sisters’ lives. Because Medicaid ensured Tucker’s needs were met, his sisters grew up in a stable home, free to pursue their own dreams. Today, they are successful, working professionals who contribute to society—just as Tucker does.

Tucker brings wisdom, steadiness, and kindness to the world. His story is not unique—countless families rely on Medicaid to ensure their loved ones get the care they need to live full, meaningful lives. Protecting Medicaid isn’t just about numbers on a budget; it’s about valuing every person, every family, and the strength of our communities.

For families like Tucker’s, Medicaid is not just necessary—it is priceless.

Tucker Murrell was born at just 28 weeks, weighing a whopping 2 pounds, 5 ounces.
